Nasa careers spacesuit technician12/31/2023 Analyze hardware and softgood capabilities to resolve issues with PLSS/PGS/GSE flight and training hardware.Familiar with high pressure oxygen systems, breathing air and nitrogen, and operation, maintenance, test, service, calibration, and cleaning of GSE systems. Work with PLSS and Space Suit Ground Support Equipment including assisting with the design and construction of various test rigs, test stands and various electrical/pneumatic/hydraulic test support equipment.Work with test subject and astronaut crewed test execution (suit fitchecks/suit familiarization activities) in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory and various 1-G environment testing, (reduced gravity environment a plus) experience with space suit cycling, suit mobility testing, and able to support various other test venues both onsite and offsite NASA/JSC.Experience with high pressure oxygen, breathing air, and nitrogen systems. Work with various configurations of NASA Space Suit Assemblies/Pressure Garment Systems including flight and training hardware assembly/disassembly, hardware/softgood maintenance, procedure familiarization, hardware/softgood requirements, and ground support test/facility equipment.Work on Space Suit Primary Life Support System’s (PLSS) including but not limited to: PLSS component/sub-component maintenance/removal/installation, flight hardware processing/testing, including using various Ground Support Equipment (test rigs/test stands-electrical/pneumatic/hydraulic) familiar with PLSS testing procedures, high pressure oxygen systems, testing with various PLSS test chambers onsite at NASA/JSC, familiarization with clean room operations, facility operations, and PLSS test requirements.SUMMARY: The Space Suit Technician will have experience with Space Suit Portable Life Support Systems or Pressure Garment Systems or with Ground Support Equipment involving the current Extra-Vehicular Mobility Unit or the advanced EMU. She held this position until the Space Shuttle Program ended. She led the team responsible for suiting up and strapping the astronauts into the space shuttle for launch and recovering the crew upon landing. She would go on to become the only woman and only African American promoted to the position of Manager of the CEE department. McDougle had the honor of leading the first and only all-woman suit tech crew. In her new position she was responsible for leading a team of technicians to suit up astronaut crews. McDougle was promoted to the position of Crew Chief making her the first woman and first African American CEE Crew Chief. McDougle was Jemison’s suit tech for her historic mission aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor. Mae Jemison was the first African American woman to go to space – but many don’t know that an African American woman, with her own list of firsts, “suited her up”. McDougle was one of only two women technicians and the only African American technician when she began her career.Everyone knows Dr. She began her career as a CEE SuitTechnician and was responsible for processing the orange launch/entry suit assemblies worn by astronauts.
